Money Talks:YouTube Partners

Posted on 15 October 2009 by Melody

Youtube Partnership Program

YouTube’s Partnership Program was created to allow users to share in the making money opportunities from video and site advertising. Partnership qualifications include: audience size, quality of content, and your ability to consistently follow the rules outlined in Youtube’s Terms of Use and Community Guidelines.

The Partnership Program has allowed many popular YouTube users to make a regular income from advertising because high volumes of traffic to their videos equals a greater possibility of users to click through to advertisements.

YouTube Partner Profile:SMPFilms

Origin: Youtube channel and user, SMPFilms, joined in mid-2005 and soon made a name for himself with videos that featured his cat in “Mean Kitty” episodes. The founder of the channel is Cory Williams, who has profited substantially from making parodies about his life, and is currently a full time “YouTuber” as an occupation.

YouTube Channel Information

All stats information is as of 10.14.09.
Traffic: Depending on the content, smpfilms videos can average around several hundred thousands of views. (200-500k)
Channel Views: 7,547,652
Subscribers: 335,614

Profit: As of 2008 Cory Williams was making up to 20 thousand dollars a month from ad revenue on his YouTube videos. A clip from Tyra Banks’s talk show featuring YouTube celebrities shows Tyra telling the audience his monthly earnings when he declined to answer.

SMPFilms Marketing Advantages

SMPFilms engages in what is known as “viral marketing.” Viral marketing is when individuals or brands use marketing techniques on social networking sites to increase brand awareness or other marketing objectives. However, many of the more popular viral marketing efforts gain popularity without the intent of the individuals who created them.

Additional YouTube Partnership Benefits

Additional benefits of the YouTube Partnership program include:

1. Participate in co-marketing & branded entertainment opportunities with top brand advertisers.
2. Utilize your own sales to sell your own ads.
3. Learn about your audience demographics, and what content you have is the most popular & engaging
4. Videos are served reliably, and at the highest resolution possible.
5. YouTube can help you protect your content and brand.

YouTube Partner Controversy

Although YouTube’s Partnership Program has allowed many popular users to profit with significant full time incomes, controversy has become a consistent phenomena for the program.
Copyright Infringment
Most of the controversy is related to partners (and general users) infringing upon the rights of popular brands and networks. YouTube will either take action against the partner by manually removing infringing material or suspending the account sometimes indefinitely.
Audience Awareness
The other controversy that many find apparent to bring up is how general users are pissed that popular YouTubers are making profit from their videos while also getting special treatment. Honestly speaking, I think this is mainly just the result of jealousy. The general public is unaware of the unlimited money making opportunities that exist on the online world, and when popular users can make upwards of 20k+ a month for just making a video–people are bound to be upset (jealous).

Money Talks: Whateverlife.com

Posted on 08 October 2009 by Melody

Today is the first day for my new marketing series, Money Talks, where I’m reporting on the different industries around the web that are substantial avenues for making money online.

Money Talks: Myspace Layout Sites

We’ve all probably been to one at some point. Ever since the explosion of Myspace in 2003, users have wanted to be able to customize their profiles according to their design preferences.

Soon after, websites around the internet sprung up providing free layout templates and coding for myspace user websites, as well as additional fun graphics for their profile.

Myspace Layout Website Profile:Whateverlife.com

Origin:Whateverlife.com started back in 2004 when Ashley Qualls (now 18) began customizing myspace layouts for herself and friends. After word spread amongst her friends, she decided to launch a site offering free layouts to ever-growing myspace users

Website Information:Whateverlife.com

Statistics
Traffic: Roughly 7 million visitors per month, and 60 million page views.
Demographics:60% female users ages 13-17.
Profit (2009): upwards of 70k monthly
High Ranking Keywords: cute layouts, whateverlife.com, cute myspace layouts, myspace layouts etc.

Types of Advertising/Products:

Google Adsense (primary)
CPM ads by Casale Media and Value Click
Affiliate
Nabbr
Cellphone Wallpapers/related products

Whateverlife.com Marketing Advantages

The major marketing edge that Ashley has over competitors is that she is a reflection of her target audience so therefore she is able to cater her marketing campaign to what her audience likes. She has also benefited greatly from the generated buzz of her site, with features in magazine publications and popular websites–only adding to the traffic and profit potential of her site.

Here’s An Interesting Thought!

Despite the ridiculous amount of traffic Ashley Qualls is pulling into her site, she is currently (as of today atleast:10.8.09) on the third page of google for the keyword: “Myspace Layouts.”

If she’s making 70 THOUSAND dollars a month without top ranking on google for her niche (myspace layouts), I can only imagine what the number 1 ranked website for that search term is pulling in profit wise.

Several articles around the web as well as major magazines have published the inspiring story of young Ashley Qualls. Find out more about her story here:
